I have found over the years that you can ask any Australian who the first President of the United States was and they will be able to answer George Washington without hesitation. But ask these same people who Sir Edmund Barton was and the vast majority will not know.
This is appalling when you consider that he was the first Prime Minister of their own country. We Australians seem to know a lot about American history but very little of our own.
This is not the individuals fault, it is the education system that we operate under. The system here seems to concentrate on the history of other countries. It was this in mind that I decided to put together these pages.
I spent a lot of time researching to put these pages together and I hope that you will find the information interesting, informative and above all educational.
Each page contains detailed information about the Prime Minister. There is also a link that will take you to another page where the positions and appointments, in both Federal and State Governments are displayed. The Committees they served on, the Conferences they attended and the Official Visits they made to other countries are also listed.
All the portraits of the Prime Ministers are displayed courtesy of the Australian National Archives.
